6 of Cape Town’s Best First Date Venues Part II

Posted by TheScud On July - 24 - 2009

Due to the sheer volume of cool places in Cape Town I decided to have a second list of Cape Town’s Best First Date Venues. TheScud has graciously volunteered to put together the second volume. Feel free to send us your recommendations.

#1 Asoka

Restless Natives at Asoka 13th May-29

Since the name has already been mentioned I’ll start with Asoka (pr: A-shO-kar). This venue has a number of plus points. Firstly, it’s very stylish and if the lady you’re with has any style and you wish to impress her Asoka is the place for you. During the week there are different options, from regular ole dinner in cosy, mood-lit ambience, to live jazz, and on the weekends, deep, sexy house music. It offers something different for each type of date you’re likely to encounter, but Asoka is aimed at a more mature crowd.

#2 Newport

“Coffee” as played out as it may be is an ideal first date scenario. One of the nicest coffee shops in Cape Town has to be Newport in Mouille Point. Apart from serving a really good cappuccino it is well located to relish the sea-facing vista. Should coffee become a bit boring you can always suggest a walk along the promenade. Newport also happens to dish out healthy food should your date be a bit of a health nut.

#3 La Med

I know it may be a bit cliché but Camps Bay does offer plenty of options, especially if your date is from out of town. Here are two of my favourites:

If your date is easy going, likes pizza and happens to look good in sunglasses then La Med is highly recommended, particularly if it’s summer. This Cape Town institution is perfect for a Sunday afternoon rendezvous to just chill and chat and maybe enjoy a few slices of pizza-pie together.

#4 The Leopard Bar

One step up from that, and also ideal for summer, is The Leopard Bar at the 12 Apostles Hotel and Spa. It’s quite upmarket (read NOT cheap), but the cocktails are very good and the view from the terrace is unparalleled. Sunsets from this elevated location are breathtaking, and if your date feels a bit chilly you can adjourn indoors where there is usually live music.

#5 Maestro’s

Maestro’s in Milnerton is a hidden little gem. Located on the shoreline this Italian-esque restaurant offers a square-on view of Table Mountain and an Atlantic seaboard sunset. Not to mention the noise of the ebbing tide. There is an outside terrace that is ideal for a bit of privacy and best of all the deck is completely deserted during winter, when your date may want to move a little closer…

#6 Kirstenbosch Gardens

gardens

Kirstenbosch Gardens is a great alternative to your run of the mill first date options, particularly if your companion enjoys the great outdoors. Taking her on a picnic helps remove some of the pressures of your typical first date, like dressing up for a fancy restaurant. Take a bottle of vino, or two, some snacks from the nearest Woollies (just remember to shop beforehand) and a picnic blanket and who knows, you may need to move indoors, to your place a little later.
